saint phocas church
(mar fawqa)
Dating back to the crusades, a rare fact amongst Lebanon's churches, the Saint Phocas Church in Amioun is also the only church in Lebanon that contains Frankish-style frescoes as well as a mixture of both Greek and Latin inscriptions. Frescoes that date back to the 12th and 13th century adorn the apse, walls, and pillars. After centuries or restoration and modifications, the church still manages to maintain its old charm. Saint Phocas is venerated as a martyr by both Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches. His life and legend may have been a fusion of the lives of three different men of the same name: Phocas of Antioch, Phocas the bishop of Sinope, and Phocas the Gardener.
