george al-azar statue
This name refers to the statue erected in the square named after "Sheikh Gerges El-Azar", one of the most prominent rulers of the Koura region at the time of the Mutasarrifate. He died in 1908 when he was returning from the task of drawing drinking water to the town, as a result of exposure to heatstroke in the summer days. As a result, a statue of him was erected in this square in front of his house. And when water was drawn to Amioun, a memorial plaque was erected by water to mark the occasion. He planted a cedar tree near the statue.
However, during the civil war, the statue was stolen by those who attacked the town in 1976. |
